History

The Proclamation Tree, a Moreton Bay Fig, was planted by Governor Sir William Robinson to celebrate the granting of self government to the colony. The site was chosen because at that time it was the entry to the main streets of Fremantle. The tree, donated by Fremantle Auditor, Philip Webster, and the memorial, sat in a small park called the Mayor¹s Garden. This has since disappeared. The place is highly significant because of its resonances both with the understanding that the granting of self government was very important but also because it holds a memorial to an outspoken politician, W.E. Marmion, member for Fremantle and member of the first State Cabinet under Sir John Forrest.
A plaque was donated by the Fremantle Boys' School in the 1930s.
