The Wallaces News and Drapery Building is of local historic significance as a commercial premise which has operated in the town for many years. Given its prominent location, scale and form the place has high streetscape value and is also a focal element of the townscape. Further the building is representative of corner shops in country towns.
Located prominently on the corner of MacPherson Street and the Midlands Road, this large shop is of brick construction with a hipped corrugated iron roof which is partly hidden behind a parapet which extends around both street facades. Similarly the verandah extends around the shop frontages and is supported on metal posts and features decorative metal scroll-like brackets. Signage boards conceal the separate verandah roof. The shop features large display windows and has large air conditioning units attached to the roof.
This building was originally owned and built by Cowderoy's in 1924, the Walsh's in the 1980's and then the Black's. In the past it has contained three shops - drapery, tearooms and fruit shop as well as being a dressmaker in the late 1940s. (Heydon, p30 & Bridie Evans, Carnamah Notes, 1995)
