High significance as it places the lime kilns in the context of a multi-cultural community. High social
value from community for the Pappas Swamp area for its history of small leases, market gardening
and lime kilns. These kilns are representative of single entry lime kilns in the district.
A hut near the kilns has recently collapsed but other signs of domestic life remain, including olive
trees, grape vines, a well, etc. Remnants of domestic life, including some introduced species e.g.
grape vine, should be considered part of assessment. Fire damage has caused loss of some remnant
features. The kilns are in fair condition as they are partly collapsed and in danger of structural
damage from trees growing in them as well as from wild fires in the area.
Over 200 families lived in the area in simple housing, such as bag houses, in the 1950s, with a
number of people involved in lime production. A site visit with a former resident identified these kilns
as those operated by Ivan Antisich.
Antisich operated the kilns between 1934 and 1960 as the Direct Lime and Wood Supply. The lime
burners lived at the site, nearby the many people who had market gardens around Neerabup Lake /
Pappas Swamp.
