Statement of Significance

House, 2 Manning Street, is a typical limestone, brick and iron double storey house from the 1902/03. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is rare as an example of a two storey terrace type house in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Queen Anne style of architecture.

Physical Description

2 Manning Street is a double storey, limestone, brick and iron house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Federation Queen Anne style of architecture. The walls are limestone with brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The facade has a two french doors with fanlight to the upper floor and one french door and a front door with fan and side lights. The replacement double storey verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof and is supported by round steel posts with a metal balustrade to the upper level. There is a brick and rendered corbelled chimney and a limestone and brick parapet wall. The property has a low brick wall to the front boundary line. The house is set a 45 degrees to the street alignment.

History

House, 2 Manning Street was formerly known as 16 Manning Street; the numbering changed in 1934/35.
This house was built in 1902/03 for the owner and occupier, Richard Bradbury. His occupation is recorded as a plumber. In the same year the adjacent property at 4 Manning Street was built for the owner Richard Rennie, a building contractor.
Bradbury occupied the house until 1903/04 and then leased the property to tenants John Lawson and later Frank Peirce.
The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows that the brick house has a verandah at the front and at the rear is timber addition with a verandah. There is a brick closet in the back yard.
In 1920/21, Elizabeth Bradbury owned the house and she transferred it to Henry Bertram Wright who occupied the house. From 1930/31 to 1940/41, the house was owned by Muriel Ursula Wright and occupied by Charlotte Jane Mickle and later by Owen Douglas Wright. It was then transferred to James Albert Hicks in 1940/41 and occupied by Daniel Clarke. In 1951/52, the house was owned and occupied by Daniel and John Clark. They transferred the property to Robert Charles and Ruby Farrell Anderson in that year.
In 1966, the front verandah was reinstated as a concrete structure and the ground floor verandah was also replaced with concrete.
A photograph of the house in 1979/81 shows that the house is in relatively poor condition. The verandah supports and balustrades are not original. The low front wall on the boundary is not original.
This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Brown: "Positively contributing to the built environment")
In 1983, plans were submitted to the City of Fremantle to rebuild the kitchen, laundry and bathroom at the rear. It was planned to build a garage at the same time but this did not eventuate.
