Statement of Significance

The former Post Office retains some historical and social significance, despite its many uses and alterations, as the site of the first purpose built post office in Mundijong.

Physical Description

A modest Federation style bungalow with a hipped corrugated iron roof and spreading verandah under a separate skillion verandah. The building is set amongst mature trees and gardens and enclosed by a corrugated fence (approx. 7ft) with a mural painted on it and the entry bearing a sign "The Old Post Office 1896". The building is obscured from the street.

History

The first Post Master and Station Master at Mundijong was Mr R. M. Bowra, appointed in 1893. At this time, the Railway Station and Post Office at Mundijong were originally named Jarrahdale Junction. In 1895, Bowra was succeeded by Post Mistress, Mrs Mary Ann Keirnan. Mary planted the huge pine tree '...on the strip of land between Paterson Street and the railway line.
In 1896, the Post Office building was erected.
In 1897, the townsite and Post Office were renamed Mundijong. However, this only caused confusion, and so in March 1902, the name Mundijong permanently replaced the name Jarrahdale Junction.
In 1925, after a long term as Post Mistress, Mrs E. Glenn retired. Mr J. W. Clark was appointed, and held the position until 1947. In 1962, the post office was extended on the north end.
In c1995, the Post Office no longer operated from this building and had moved into the building that was previously occupied by the Co-Op, further north along Paterson Street.
The former Post Office was sold and then operate as Dot's Tea Rooms. An additional building has been erected alongside the former Post Office building and used as an art gallery and shop. Dot's Tea Gardens then became Camelia Tea Gardens for a short time before being sold as a private residence.
