Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical timber framed single storey cottage dating from the first decades of the twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

House, 101 Marmion Street is a single storey, timber and zincalume house with a symmetrical facade designed as a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with painted weatherboard. The roof is hipped and clad with zincalume. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door with top fanlights flanked on either side by timber framed double hung sash windows. The dropped roof verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof supported by timber posts with decorative iron lace work. There is a timber picket fence to the front boundary line.

History

Lot 1128 was part of a Government reserve until at least 1917/18. By 1920/21 a cottage is recorded on the lot. The owner/occupier was Annie Jones. (Fremantle Rate Book records)
