the Camballin project is significant tot he development of rural industries in the Kimberley.
In the 1950's Kimberley Durack experimented with rice growing on the floodplains at Camballin land that had previously been used for lambing paddocks by Liveringa Station and was irrigated for that purpose. The experiments were largely unsuccessful. By 1969 the project had been taken over by the Australian land and Cattle Company who were interested in damming the Fitzroy River for crops to fatten cattle. the Australian Land and Cattle Company abandoned the Camballin irrigation area in 1983 after floodwaters breached the levee banks constructed to control seasonal inundation from the Fitzroy River.
