Statement of Significance

It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Inter War Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

28 King William Street is a single storey, masonry and tile house built c.1935 with an asymmetrical facade designed as an example of the Inter War Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are face brick and rendered masonry. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. The facade has one projecting room. There is a face brick chimney evident. There is a brick wall to the front boundary and excessive foliage making further description difficult.

History

King William Street was called Florence Street until c. 1950. The street was largely developed in the 1890s and early 1900s.

House, 28 King William Street was built between 1933 and 1942. In 1942, it was owned by Lawrence Lydon and occupied by William Mooney. During the 1942/43 year, the house was bought by Ernest Hodgson, who moved into the place.

A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a substantial brick residence with a verandah running the across the front, following the line of the building which had a projecting front room. There was an asbestos room adjoining the house at the rear and a timber laundry was located at the north eastern corner of the lot, along with a galvanised iron outbuilding at the rear of the property.

In the early 1950s, House, 28 King William Street was owned by John Rutter and was let to a succession of tenants. By 1960, the property was owned and occupied by Nichola and Michele Smerilli, who were still the occupants in 1982. House, 28 King William Street has had few owners since that time.
