Statement of Significance

Social significance to the local community as a local pre-primary centre.

Physical Description

Single storey painted brick and terracotta tile gable and half timbered roof building. The decoratively painted façade features 'Hazel Orme Community Kindergarten est. 1923’.

History

A certificate of title shows City of Fremantle as owner of the place on a new title from July 1933. The title covers five lots facing Samson Street and the matching five facing Watkins Street, being part lots 16-25 of Fremantle Lot 79, and creating one large area bounded by Watkins, Samson and Nannine Streets.

A 1969 newspaper article describes Hazel Orme Kindergarten as being in South Terrace, but about to move as the facilities were’ inadequate and unsuitable for present-day kindergarten teaching’. A photograph shows a weatherboard building with timber battens and weatherboards to dado height. The roof is hipped and gabled, of corrugated iron, with a skillion entrance porch making up a large corner. The article states that the kindergarten was built in 1932, when it was acknowledged as a model kindergarten for the state. Hazel Orme, for whom the place was named, was director of the first kindergarten in Fremantle, which operated out of the (now demolished) RSL hall in South Terrac
