Statement of Significance

The former sergeant's house is one of the early remaining buildings in Katanning and represents the presence of law and order in the growing town.

Physical Description

Building is a single storey brick house, with a hipped and gabled corrugated zincalume roof. It features typical tuck-pointed stretcher bond brickwork, double hung sash windows and slender Tuscan posts on the verandah. The original verandah floor has been replaced with concrete, and an extension, carport and casement window were added in the 1960ss.

History

In June 1891 the government called tenders for the erection of police quarters and the successful contractors were Thorn, Bower and Stewart. The quarters were erected that same year, along with the station and cells.
The new building was not without fault, with the mantle piece in the front room riddled with white ants, no oven in the kitchen, no water closet for the use of business, lack of security and locking, and windows wide enough for two people to climb out of at the same time.
The quarters were occupied in December 1892 by the towns' first police constable, Tom Conner.
