Recognition of cultural heritage value; Provide recognition and protection through the processes of the Town Planning Scheme. Recommend that the place is retained and conserved if possible. Photographically record the place prior to any major redevelopment or demolition. Inclusion in the Shire's Town Planning Scheme means a local recognition of the heritage value of a place. Full implication of inclusion in the Town Planning Scheme are outlined in Appendix 1. Should a development application be received for a place, an assessment of the appropriateness of development would be made. Professional advice and consultation would be available, from the Heritage Council of WA, the Shire or specialised consultants, to inform property owners of development options should it be appropriate. Heritage Council and National Trust properties also included in the Town Planning Scheme Provisions.

Statement of Significance

The place represents associations with the postal and
telecommunication developments in Kondinin. The place is an identifiable element in the Jones and
Gordon Street vistas, and is an important component of the character of the Kondinin townscape.

Physical Description

The red brick construction faces the railway and Jones Street. A central section with
three windows is flanked either side by a low roofed entry space. The main building has a hipped
corrugated iron roof.

History

Until the purpose built post office was constructed in 1923,
the services were provided at Graham's Store. In 1923, the post office was constructed on the corner
front of the lot. The first Post master was Bert Bandy. During the 1920s, the PMG Linesman's Depot
was established with an 8 man work-force. The linesman's depot constructed in the late 1960s at the
rear of the post office is now on a separate title, and it is the Telstra automatic phone exchange. In the
early 1990s the post office, as part of a statewide rationalisation was sold into private ownership. The
incumbent Postmaster, C Holberton purchased the property and continued as Postmaster.
