SIGNIFICANT AT LOCAL LEVEL Retain and conserve if possible; endeavour to conserve the significance of the place through provisions in the Town Planning Scheme with encouragement to the owner to conserve the place. Photographically record the place prior to any redevelopment.

Statement of Significance

The former butcher shop has local aesthetic and historic significance for its contribution to the
streetscape and as being representative of a period and building style not commonly found in the town.

Physical Description

The former butcher shop is single storey brick with old CGI clad residence behind. The shopfront has a tiled wall
surrounding the window and a rendered parapet wall above the street awning. Overall, because of the time at
which it was built, the front facade is distinctly "Art Deco" in style, representing a period in the development of the
town which is not strongly reflected. Whilst therefore different in character to most of the shops in the main street,
its proportions and scale compliment the street scape. Real estate signage on the shop/office at present detracts
from the building's character and could be modified.

History

John Thomas Smith had a butcher's shop, dwelling house and stables here c1918. The business was then taken
over by David H. Clow. The old shop was pushed back on the site and a new shop built in front for V. G. Husbands
in 1937. The shop was officially opened by Fred Porter. In 2014, the place was being occupied by a beauty salon and since 2015 it has been used as a café.
