Statement of Significance

House, 23 Swanbourne Street, is a single storey timber, fibro and iron house dating from c1910. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 23 Swanbourne Street is a two storey timber, asbestos and Colourbond house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with fibrous cement sheeting. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with Colourbond. The ground floor has the original verandah roof, which is under a separate roof with no support posts. The asymmetrical front façade has a door to one side, and a protruding front room with timber framed windows. The top floor has a hipped Colourbond roof. There are no windows to the street elevation. The house is situated at street level. There is a red brick and timber picket fence to the front boundary line.

History

This seems to be part of Lot 795 and has several dwellings on it over time. It is not clear from Fremantle Local History Collection Files, (filed by address) which house becomes no. 23 so a construction date is unknown. The map titled P.W.D. W.A. 6409 and dated 1898 shows no dwellings on this part of Swanbourne Street. The P.W.D. plan no. 13017 dated 1913 shows a narrow stone or brick dwelling on the right hand side of the block with a timber or iron verandah at the front.

High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).

(These statements based on street survey only).
