The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of some cultural heritage significance for its contribution to the heritage of Fremantle in terms of its individual or collective aesthetic, historic, social or scientific significance, and /or its contribution to the streetscape, local area and Fremantle. Its contribution to the urban context should be maintained and enhanced.

Physical Description

House 114 Forrest Street is a single storey timber framed and weatherboard clad house with a corrugated iron hipped roof with small half gables. The separate bull nosed verandah is supported by chamfered timber posts between infilled balustrading (balustrading not original). The façade has timber double hung sash windows flanking the central entrance door that has side lights. There is a timber fence to the front boundary fronting the garden.

History

Numbers were allocated in 1905. This house does not appear in post office directories until 1921. Prior to that, the section of Forrest Street east of Chudleigh Street up to Coode Street had no development. The house was originally No. 189. It became number 114 when the whole street was renumbered in 1939.
The first occupant was Edward G Gosling, and he was still in residence in 1949 (when post office directory records cease).
The 1928-33 sewerage map (No. 2137) shows three houses on the street east of Chudleigh, and two more under construction. No. 114 appears as a timber house with a full-length front verandah and rear verandah. The bathroom is under the main roof, in the north-east corner. There is a chimney on the outside east wall, and timber outbuildings north east of the house near the boundary.
House, 114 Forrest Street was included on the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80.
