Statement of Significance

James Cowan was a Roads Board member 1898-9.
He had been Magistrate of the Local Court in Perth [childrens]. Senior Police Magistrate Registrar and
Master of the Supreme Court etc etc Resident magistrate. 1876 he married Edith Dirksey Brown of
Glengarry, Geraldton.
Edith Cowan was the first woman in parliament in Australia. She and her husband Police Magistrate 2
James Cowan lived here from 1896 to 1909+. It had previously been the home of his sister Miss LillasCowann who ran a girls' school in Perth and Fremantle at which his wife Edith Dircksey Brown had been educated.

Avonmore Terrace - site of the home of Edith Cowan'now an almost vacant lot with a shop in one
corner.
This house was situated between Rosendo and Salvado on the west side of Avonmore Terrace.behind
where the corner store now stands... old lot nos. 78E 6 79ES
