HIGH LEVEL OF PROTECTION TPS (Town Planning Scheme) High Level of protection through the Town Planning Scheme, i.e inclusion in a Heritage List prepared pursuant to Clause 5.2 of the City of Wanneroo District Planning Scheme No 2 (DPS2); provide maximum encouragement to the owner to conserve the significance of the place.

Statement of Significance

As a site that has a long history of connections with the lime burning industry from early home builder
to present commercial operation. It was built by the family that are still running the business and its
adaptations show change in mechanical aids.

Physical Description

kiln 4 -not identifible.
Kilns 47, 48 are both three-arch kilns but still fired in traditional way. Side doors have been widened to
enable unloading by a bob-cat.

History

Kiln 4 -believed to have existed as a kiln for use of Butcher Lee who was a homebuilder in the
Wanneroo district from the 1920s. The current owner (who has lived / worked there for over 50 years)
has no knowledge of its existence. It is possible that the two kilns and associated lime industry on the
site have replaced / incorporated the earlier kiln.
In 1955 and 1957 the Susac family built two large kilns on the same site as the previous kiln. The kiln
operations are still continuing in 2005 as Susac Lime Company. As a small producer Susac is able to
provide good quality control and this has led to the use of his products in places such as new
Parliament House in Canberra.
