Statement of Significance

This place is an example of an early building in the area and is representative of development north of the railway line within Bayswater. It is part of the early development resulting from the
Copley / Burnside subdivision, that occurred in response to the relocation of the Midland Railway Workshops in 1904.

Physical Description

Elevated brick house with corrugated metal hip roof with vented peaks covering a verandah across the front and down one side (now enclosed with glass louvred windows). The front verandah has a brick balustrade and brick pillars supporting the roof and is approached by a flight of cement steps.

History

This house was built by Alfred William Burns, workshops employee, in 1908. It is noticeable that the larger houses in the Burnside/Copley Street subdivision tend to be on double blocks in Burnside Street, which afforded a commanding view and was close to the Railway Station. The house appears to be one of the original houses in Burnside Street.
