History

The place at 29 John Street was originally part of Lot 282. Lot 282 ran from Middleton Road to the foot of Mt Clarence Reserve.

In 1883, Lot 282 was included among many being offered for sale by public auction by the Crown Lands Office. Lots 274-288 along Middleton Road between Suffolk and Bluff Streets were all 1 acre Lots and were priced at £30 each. Many of these Lots were then offered for sale in 1885 (by Chris J Ashwell, The General Agency Co.). In 1889 they were owned by the Albany Land Company.

Sometime later, a subdivision was undertaken from Lots 280-286 creating numerous smaller Lots. The streets within the subdivision, which were private streets, all took their names from the Apostles of the New Testament with John Street and Mark, Matthew and Luke Lanes. John Street essentially went through the middle of Lots 280-286, those houses to the north having street frontage to Middleton Road and those to the south of the original Lots having street frontage to John Street. The house at 29 John Street was built on Lot 17.
