Statement of Significance

It is historcally important as it refers to a time hen it was customary for the Post Office to iclude accommodation for the Post Master and his family when maintaining the mail distribution and communication by cables to Perth, Kalgoorlie and the Eastern States.

Physical Description

Situated at the south end of town going towards Carrabin. It is a large building with sweeping front verandah that is attached to the wall under the main roof. The carport is attached at the end and another free standing at the rear. The laundry and bathroom are situated outside to the rear of the building. The kitchen and lounge area remain intact with 10' ceilings with corrugated walls and ceilings. A large passage way through the centre of what was the original postal quarters.

History

The Westonia and Carrabin mail run was established in 1911, this building was established in 1917 when the Westonia mines were running to full capacity. The building was dismantled from Kookynie and reerecteed in Westonia. Mail delivery to the local community first occurred in 1916. It ceased to exist as a Post Office in 1948 and was purchased as a residence in 1949 by Dora and William Henderson. In 1986 it was sold to Australian Consolidated Minerals as a residence for the miners when the Edna May Gold Mine was reopened. On closure of the mine it was donated to the curtin University to be used for accommodation for their students.
