Statement of Significance

The single storey brick and iron cottage, in the Federation
Arts & Crafts style, has cultural significance because:
it has long historical associations with the Whitfield
and Cariss families, valued members of the
Peppermint Grove community;
it is an attractive and representative example of a
Federation Arts & Crafts style cottage, which
presents strikingly to the street;
it is part of a cultural group and a townscape area.

The place is an attractive example of a cottage in the
Federation Arts & Crafts style which has been adapted in its
plan form to maximise the presentation to the street

The place is a good example of a Federation Arts & Crafts
cottage where the stylistic elements of the decorative gables
are given greater prominence by the rhythm of the 'waterfall
front' arrangement. A high level of integrity has been
retained.

The place is part of a cultural group.
The place is part of the towns cape area at the western end of
Irvine Street.

Cottages of this style and quality are comparatively rare in
the suburb.

The place is a good example of the Federation Arts & Crafts
style for a Peppermint Grove cottage.

History

Association with the Whitfield family for half a century, then
the Cariss family for some decades. Both families were
valued members ofthe Peppermint Grove community. Some
