The site represents a way of life no longer practiced and
demonstrates associations with pioneer families of the district.
The dance floor was located in close proximity to the South Kulin
tennis courts, which were the first in the district, being built in 1913. The dance floor was located on
a different farm to the tennis courts.
The dance floor was portable, and the dances took place in the open air, hessian was draped around
the sides to form walls. Mr and Mrs Woodman provided the music for the dances, with violin and
piano. When the floor was not in use, it stood against trees. Mrs Woodman was the first school
teacher at the Kulin School.
South Kulin developed a community strength and focus and it was planned to be on the railway
route. However the railway passed South Kulin some distance to the west, and the settlement did
not develop.
