This type of system is significant to the area as the rock catchments, due to their elevation, are suitable for economic conservation and the buiding materials were supplied on the spot in providing a natural supply of water to the community.
Set in a reserve of rocky bedrock which covers 27.6ha. The water runs from the rock when precipitation occurs, to the walls which are natural rock and cement. The rock used for the wall has been blasted from the base of the rock. The walls follow the natural contour of the rock. The water collects at the wall and drains into an enclosed drain which runs into the tank.
This runoff was established when the tank was built in 1928. From the turn of the century, as agriculture increased withhin the district the problem of ater supply and thier demand had to be met. The availability of underground water, natural catchments were excavated. The rock catchments were not dependant on the intensity of rainfall runoff. By using these runoffs they were stock and vermin proof and free from pollution and salinity with little or no maintenance.
