SIGNIFICANT AT LOCAL LEVEL Retain and conserve if possible; endeavour to conserve the significance of the place through provisions in the Town Planning Scheme with encouragement to the owner to conserve the place. Photographically record the place prior to any redevelopment.

Statement of Significance

The "Wesfarmers" shop has high aesthetic and historic significance to the streetscape and town
character of Northampton. The significance would be strengthened by more sympathetic treatment of
the verandah and window/doorframe elements of the shopfront. The shop has historic significance as
an example of the form garage/service stations previously took.

Physical Description

The "Wesfarmers" shop is single storey with rendered stone parapet walls which screen a CGI roof behind. An
aluminium awning on the building is at odds with the streetscape. The front doors and windows, probably timber
originally, have been replaced with aluminium frames which are not in keeping with the period of the building or the
character of the street/town scape.

History

The shop was formerly a garage built at a time before such buildings had the image of what is considered a service
station today. Originally petrol bowsers would have stood, free standing at the edge of the road in front of the shop,
to service vehicles. In more recent years the building has housed a greengrocers, a tea rooms, a grocery store and
a Wesfarmers agency (Northampton Historical Society).
