Statement of Significance

A fine example of post WW1 boom time architecture in Cottesloe. Particulady fine glass in perfect «>.
condition. It has historical and architectural merit and is high in integrity being hardly altered.

Physical Description

"Lynton", Edwardian bungalow with English " Domestic Revival" influences built in 1919 for H.V. [Bert] Hill
and his wife Margaret, Cottesloe Shire Clerk. It has a multi-hipped broken back and gabled
iron/zincalume roof with a skillion at the back. Tuckpointed red brick walls with two string course of cream
stucco, one at window-sill level. Half timbered gable front to the east with pebbledash. The short
chimney stack is decorated with shingles and a small terracotta pot. Diagonally set bay window with
diamond-paned, leaded, casement windows highlighted by a small stained glass motif. The fixed upper
lights have rectangular leaded panes and stained glass inserts. A porthole window and other visible
windows all have the lovely floral stained glass with square leads above and diamond below. The
wooden verandah to east and south has slender posts with fretted wooden brackets creating a frieze.
The wooden handrail is supported by slender square balusters. The house is surrounded by a high brick
wall of more recent vintage. Shaded by mature trees.

History

Built In 1919 by local builder Mr Fieldgate for Bert Hill [Galllpoli veteran] and his English wife Margaret who lived there
until 1935 when they moved to "Eddystone" in Avonmore Terrace.
