History

Pappas Swamp (around Lake Neerabup) is named after John Pappas (Jean Papavasiliou) who
bought the land c1930. He then leased plots of land there to Southern European Market gardeners.
European migrants settled in the area with their families, leased out land until into the 1950s. It was a
condition of the lease that the house had to be removed at the end of the lease, so most houses were
basic in construction. A typical house had walls made of hessian bags coated with lime to make them
stiff and waterproof with a roof of timber and corrugated iron. At the same time as leasing land to
market gardners Pappa began a lime-buming business, Perth Lime and Stone Company. He is known
to have had at least four kilns in the area around Lake Neerabup.
