Statement of Significance

The place is associated with the development of Guildford Road as the main thoroughfare in Bayswater and surrounding suburbs throughout the twentieth century; The place is a representative example of a post-war residence built in the Bayswater area; The place is representative of the practice of government acquisition of properties for the provision of subsidised housing in the Perth metropolitan area.

Physical Description

The property is a single detached house constructed with brick and masonry on limestone footings, with a tile roof. It provides approx 200 square meters of living area, including a kitchen/dining, lounge room, bathroom, laundry, water closet and 4 bedrooms. It also has accessible basement area that appears to cover the whole property.

History

House, 459 Guildford Road, Bayswater is located within a block bound by Guildford Road, Leake Street and King William Street, located in the larger Swan Location U. The block was bought by John Harrold, 'joiner of Perth' around 1885 and subdivided, at the turn of the century. The current dwelling was constructed in 1957. It was reportedly used by the Autism Association of Western Australia prior to its use as mainstream rental housing in 1996 by the State Housing Commission (by then Homeswest).
