The Roebourne Gaol was built to enforce the standards of British Law in the late 1800s. It was used from 1887-1923 and again from 1975-1984. It currently houses the Tourist Bureau, Museum and an Arts and Crafts outlet.
This notable public building is set in the Historic Law and Order Precinct of Roebourne (adjacent to the Police Station, Courthouse etc). In 1884 wooden sells were used while the Court House and Government Offices were built between 1887-88. Four new stone cells were built with iron rings set into the floor. A kitchen and day room were added at that time, built by E Martin. The present four winged main gaol and cells were built in 1896 by S M Stansmore.
