Statement of Significance

Historic - George Moir purchased this property in 1858. George was one of George Cheyne's nephews
that came out from Scotland.
Social - The Mongup shearing shed was used as a communal shearing shed for all in the area. This
shed was also used for dances and social gatherings.
Aesthetic - a fine example of early settler homestead and outbuildings, virtually unchanged since the
1360s. Typical of the Moir holdings eg Sandalwood and Glengarry.

Physical Description

Mongup is located on the Peenebup Creek, with its water supply coming from a soak located near the house. There is a main house, cottage, blacksmith shop, stables and shearing shed. The cottage is believed to be the oldest building on the property built before 1858. The main house, shearing shed, and blacksmith shop appear to have been built at the same time in the early 1960s. All have Old English Bond brickwork. The blacksmith shop still has the remains of the old bellows inside and the shearing shed has the old wool press. Nearby the soak which waters the two houses stands the old picket fence sheep yards and old sheep dip.

Integrity/Authenticity

MODIFICATIONS The main house was rendered to save the brickwork from crumbling.
