Statement of Significance

The Marronobbing Well has considerable historic significance for its association with the early pastoral industry. It has further significance for its association with Charles Hunt. It is evidence of the use of local stone.

Physical Description

Situated south of the Old Goldfields Road and near Mooranoppin
Homestead [Place No. 22], the Marronobbing Well is a large, rectangular shaped soak which is stone lined. It has collapsed in part to the south.

History

The Marronobbing Well is marked by a plaque which reads: "This well was dug and lined with stone by farmer Robert Hardey prior to Charles Hunt's first visit to the area in March 1864. Hunt used it as a base camp in 1865 and although dry, reported that "it will make a very good reservoir to be filled by the first rains"."
