SIGNIFICANT AT LOCAL LEVEL Retain and conserve if possible; endeavour to conserve the significance of the place through provisions in the Town Planning Scheme with encouragement to the owner to conserve the place. Photographically record the place prior to any redevelopment.

Statement of Significance

If its original character is reinstated, the building has high local significance to the street/townscape for
aesthetic reasons. Its past use as a bank gives it a social historic significance

Physical Description

Former bank, timber framed building lined with weatherboard and CGI roofing. Verandahs have been enclosed
with asbestos sheeting which detracts from the original form of the building. Together with its modern fence, the
modifications detract from the townscape value of this prominent corner of the main street.

History

This block of land was bought by the National Bank c1915 and a bank building and quarters were constructed.
During World War II, the bank moved to the former Bank of New South Wales premises (Site No. 61). This
building was then converted to a residence. (Lyn Diepeveen)

Chronology Entries
1943 During World War II the Commonwealth Government decided that country towns would oniy have or;e
bank. Northampton had two - the National Bank and the Bank of New South Wales. A draw took place
and the National Bank won, so the Bank of New South Wales closed and their premises were taken over
by the National Bank.
