History

The Bruce Rock District Bush Fire Brigade was formed on 26th March 1945, due to the untiring efforts of Max Holtfreter, who had promoted the idea since 1938. In 1943, Holtfreter built his own tank, which was the first semblence of any approach to fighting fires. An approach was made to the Roads Board for financial assistance and although funds were not forthcoming, the shire donated a second hand truck, The presence of fire fighters was not readily accepted on many properties and the consequence was the properly constituted body which formed in 1945. By 1948, there was a growing appreciation of the services and in 1950 they were represented at the Perth Royal Agricultural Show, where they gave a demonstration.
