An historic site without built features. Recommend that the site is recognised by means of a plaque, place name, interpretive material, or an architectural or urban design, in due course.

Statement of Significance

The site is significant as the first and only school site in Elgin, and its associations with education, the community, students and teachers.

History

The Elgin School was opened in 1909 due to the efforts of Mrs D. B. Reid of 'Bridge farm'. Mrs Reid boarded the school teachers until 1924. During 1917 and 1918, Mr Reid rode to Stratham to get children to keep the school open. In 1936 the school closed when a school bus was introduced to take the children to Stratham.
