Physical Description

A single-storey brick and iron home built in 1921. House is set on a large property fronting Helena River. Numerous alterations have been made to the house. The property has a well, sheds and some mature vegetation. The tennis court used to be on the block next door (No 3).

History

The property was originally granted to G. Cowcher in 1830-42. In 1857 the land was bought by John Hyde and later belonged to Spencer Crompton. The original home was an Indian bungalow style house with French doors opening onto the front verandah. This building was demolished prior to 1921 and its remaining bricks were used in the south wall and part of the west wall of the existing house. Mr Stewart was a trained veterinarian, he used to teach wool classing and farm management at Guildford Grammar School. The Stewart's had several children. Five boys slept on the verandah after it was partially infilled.
