The site has associations with the development of the railway line in the south west and with John Clarke.
The Elgin Siding is on the Boyanup to Busselton line, west of Boyanup. The Bunbury to Boyanup railway was completed in 1887, but not used until 1891. The Boyanup line was connected to thte main southwest line from Perth on 22nd August 1893, and Busselton connected to Donnybrook line on 26th December 1895, and the Bridgetown extension was on 1st November 1898.
In 1896, John and Elizabeth Clarke and their son Charles arrived in Elgin on the 'Firth Moray' in Scotland via Western Australian goldfields. Clarke was an agent for Hayward's in Bunbury, buying and selling produce around the district. he took up 2,000 acres of virgin bush ne called 'Billabong', later called 'Elgin'. The Elgin Siding was in that property.
