Statement of Significance

The place represents a way of life associated with a country store. It is integral within the main street streetscape and character of the townscape of Ballidu.

Physical Description

Timber framed, fibro clad, gable roof with break pitch extension all around, including the shop front.

History

The place was originally a garage with a GMH logo on the facade (much like the craft shop see Ref No ), with the convenience of the blacksmith next door. In the early 1930s Bill and Belle Curtis converted the garage into tearooms, with Mrs (Grandma) Curtis and Mrs Squires running the shop. They sold lollies, drinks, icecreams and were well known for the fresh scones on Saturdays. After they moved to Jarrahdale, Mrs Squire's daughter Eileen, and her husband Bill Morton took over until Mr & Mrs Toster purchased the place in 1946. At that time they extended the shop to include drapery and work-clothes, deli lines, meals and school lunches, as well as Mr Toster running a barber shop. Mrs Toster made ice blocks every night and Mr Toster's meringues were well known. After they moved to a war service property in 1950, several other proprietors have run the place as a general store.
