Statement of Significance

The Clock Tower has a social value, displaying memorials to significant events in the town.

Physical Description

The Clock Tower is approximately 0.75 m square and 2.0 m high, with a square clock on, three faces (not the side facing away from the street) at the top. At the base, or on the north side, is a rectangular split block cairn, containing a time capsule.

History

There are plaques on the side of the tower facing Barrack Street, with inscriptions as follows:
1- Rotary Badge
2- Merredin - 100 years
This plaque was placed here by the Merredin Shire Council on 16 March 1991
in commemoration of the centenary of Merredin (names of Shire President, Councillors, Clerk).
3- At this point on 9th August 1983 - Ultra Marathon Runner Ron Grant broke the World Long Run Record of 8,299 km His run commenced in Brisbane on 28th March 1983. Erected by the Rotary Club of Merredin.
4- Bicentennial Plaque .AUSTRALIA. 1788/1988
Projects of the Committee for the Bicentennial celebrations in Merredin during 1988: Lighting up Railway Station Museum
Financial assistance towards Town Hall restoration
Established the York to Goldfields Heritage Trail
Placed plaques on former school sites in the shire

Sept 17th: Regional Invitation Games involving 7 sports
Oct 2nd: Hosted participants and horses on Mundaring to Kalgoorlie goldfields pipeline trek.
October 15th & 16th: Gala picnic week-end to Bruce Rock and Ardath aboard
the Hotham Valley Steam Train.

On the top of the cairn is a plaque with the following inscription:
This time capsule was placed here by the Minister for Agriculture Mr R. Old
on the 14th October 1979 to commemorate the 150th year of WA to be opened on the
State 's 200th anniversary 2029.
