Full implication of inclusion in the Town Planning Scheme are outlined in Appendix 1. Should a development application be received for a place, an assessment of the appropriateness of development would be made. Professional advice and consultation would be available, from the Heritage Council of WA, the Shire or specialised consultants, to inform property owners of development options should it be appropriate. Statement of Significance

The store is of considerable significance in Piawaning, as the oldest building in the town, and continuous operation as a store since 1922. It has a sense of place for generations of Piawaning people as it is also an informal social and meeting place and communication centre. It is critical to the townscape and streetscape character of Piawaning

Physical Description

Timber framed and clad with weatherboard and asbestos. The posts in front of the shop were former railway timber from the vermin proof pit where the railway crossed the rabbit proof fence north of Piawaning.

History

The store was established in 1922 by the Boreham family, it was the second store in Piawaning after the railway came in 1919. The store was the post office and general place where people met, bought supplies and sent and collected mail. From 1949 to 1955, the Halligan family ran the store, during which time a hall was adjoined to the shop on the south side. It is called the 'back room', and was an ex-Women's Army Barracks from Nungarin. It serves as a social drinking place, and local get-to-gethers are held regularly twice a week. The store is the social gathering place in the district.
