This place is representative of the early civic activities that occurred within Bayswater. It has associations with the Drill Hall.
The place also has historic value for its association with Gold Estates, one of the most prominent land developers within Bayswater at the time.
Sporting Complex grouped around a central football ground with facilities for various sporting activities such as tennis and lawn bowls. A large steel-framed grandstand is set against high grassed banks on the northern side and there are change rooms, ablutions, storage and other facilities contained with a substantial brick building forming the base of the Grandstand.
This public facility should be paired with the Drill Hall as a dual work of the Roads Board which were opened in 1907. The land for both the Oval and the Drill Hall was partly donated by Gold Estates, which subdivided Swan Location V in 1904, their planning proceeding at the same time. The recreation ground, as it was then known, has been the scene of many important social and sporting events, including the children's treats of the early days and the Centenary Sports Day. It also provided a home for the various local sporting bodies. Some of the early
facilities were built on a self help basis and some with sustenance labour during the Depression, but none of these early structures remain. The eventual leasing of the oval to the Soccer Association was a significant event, indicating that, with the many other pressures set upon it in the early 1950s, the upkeep of such a large facility was outstripping the resources of the Roads Board.
