Statement of Significance

The Jingalup Government Dam has historic and social significance as a reminder of the period when Chinese were brought to Kojonup in the 1890s to provide much needed labour. This dam is an example of the work of the Chinese, who dug it by hand. The Chinese did not remain in Kojonup. The dam was also an important stopping place for travellers through the area, including those driving cattle.

Physical Description

The Kingalup Government Dam is in the Jingalup Reserve, in a bush setting near a creek.

History

The Government of the day financed the sinking of this dam in 1894, using Chinese labour. The dam was dug by hand. Jingalup Dam was built to supply Jingalup Estate with water. For some years travellers stopped there with their horses, and local people used the water for washing or when rain water was scarce. There was no pump, and water was baled out with buckets. The water is now salty.
