Hamurana has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
The place is a fine yet simple example of a timber and iron Federation Bungalow, and its use of timber relatively rare for residences in and around the historic townsite which is dominated more by brick and stone construction. Although not visible from the road, the attractive, mature landscape setting gives the place high landmark and aesthetic value.
The place is associated with Mary Hamlin whose husband Herbert (Paddy) Hamlin died in active service while army major with the 10th Lighthorse.
It is significant individually and as one of a group of houses along Middleton Road, an important main thoroughfare in Albany that links the townsite with the beach, made up of an eclectic range of housing and architectural styles from the earliest periods of development to early 20th century.
Some of the notable features of this place include:
• Elevated position on large suburban block
• Mature and well laid out garden setting for style of house
• Symmetrical façade with wooden framed windows and door
• Brick chimneys with stepped finish to top of chimneys
• Hipped roof with bull nose verandah
• Timber lattice skirt covering foundation space
Some obvious modifications include:
• Wooden decorative finishes on front verandah
• Rear extensions
Hamurana was owned by Mary Hamlin (nee Louch) who married 10th Lighthorse army major, Herbert Bowen (Paddy) Hamlin. He died in Ismailia. Paddy was born in NZ, hence the name which means House of Hamlin.
