Statement of Significance

The picture gardens make a significant contribution to the townscape and have always been associated with prominent people in the town. Part of a group of essential character elements in Chinatown.

Physical Description

TImber framed, corrugated iron walls and roof.

History

Originally built by the Yamasaki family as a dry goods store, the building was converted to a Japanese play house, then a picture theatre in 1926. The last owner/operator was Peter Haynes who for many years was president of the Shire. Closed & derelict at time of assessment (July 1982)
