Statement of Significance

House 27 Howard Street is a single storey, rendered masonry and tile house dating from the c1899. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. The place is a simple example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

27 Howard Street is a single storey rendered masonry and tile house designed in the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. Walls are rendered masonry. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. The facade is symmetrical with a central front door flanked on either side by timber framed casement windows. The verandah has a tiled roof supported by rendered columns on brick piers. There is a rendered masonry wall to the front boundary line.

History

This house has been known as 27 Howard Street since its construction. The renumbering of the street in 1935/36 did not affect this property. This house is first recorded in the Post Office directories in 1899 and the occupant was Captain William S Owston. Captain Owston was a master mariner and landowner in the area. The property retained an association with the Owston family until at least 1905 as Mason Owston was the occupant at this time. The 1908 sewerage plan of this site shows this brick house has a verandah at the front and portion of the back of the building. A number of additions in brick and timber were present on the back of the house as were two water tanks. In the back yard was a large timber shed and a stone closet. A stone wall was present on the front boundary except for a portion on the eastern side.

Integrity/Authenticity

Medium to high degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). Medium degree of authenticity with much original fabric remaining but with some alterations. (These statements based on street survey only).
