House, 15 Burt Street is a good example of a brick residence in the Federation Queen Anne style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
House, 15 Burt Street is a single storey house comprising of tuck pointed brick laid in Flemish bond to the facade which has a faceted bay. The terracotta tiled (probably not original) hipped roof has two chimneys with corbelling extant.
Burt Street is likely named after Chief Justice Sir Archibald Paull Burt, who came to Fremantle in 1861 from the West Indies. His son, Septimus Burt, became the first Attorney-General under Responsible Government. House, 15 Burt Street was constructed for Eliza Bovell c. 1902. This was demolished shortly afterwards (may have been as a result of a fire). Another cottage was built on the site c.1907 for Eliza Bovell. This property remained in the Bovell family from 1893 for more than 60 years.
