House, 16 Solomon Street is a two storey masonry and tile house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped with a simple gable and clad with tiles. There is a brick and rendered corbelled chimney with two chimney pots evident. The verandah is under a separate tiled roof supported by pairs of steel poles (not original). There is a wrought iron balustrade. Front windows are aluminium. The house is set above the street, the slope of the land allowing for an understory with a garage at the front. There is a face brick high retaining wall to the front boundary line.
Solomon Street was originally known as Mary Street. It changed its name in 1951/52 to honour Elias Solomon, a former mayor and MLA. Lot 15 of 798 to 801 in 1914/15 rate book is a vacant lot but there is a note in pencil “house in erection 07/04/15”. By 1919/20 there is a cottage owned and occupied by Robert Edmonson who also owned 14 & 18 of 801 as vacant lots.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). Medium degree of authenticity with some original fabric remaining. (These statements based on street survey only).
Condition assessed as fair to good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
