Statement of Significance

Physical Description

Refer to Heritage Council of Western Australia's Register of Heritage Places - Register and Assessment Documentation. Bronze statue on pedestal of granite, 33 feet from ground. One hand clasps plan of harbour works, four panels on pedestal, on front panel facing harbour a laurel wreath; back panel shows train emerging from hills tunnel; side panels show goldfields water supply scheme and Mundaring Weir. Inscription below gives précis of his life and work. Four bronze dolphins guard the four corners of the pedestal. It was designed by Pietro Porcelli in 1911.

History

Refer to Heritage Council of Western Australia's Register of Heritage Places - Register and Assessment Documentation. Designed and built in 1911 by sculptor, Pietro Porcelli, this statue was erected as a memorial to engineer C Y O'Connor whose skills allowed Fremantle to develop as a port city. He designed and engineered the inner harbour and the pipeline to the eastern goldfields.
