Statement of Significance

The place is a good example of a stone residence in the Federation Queen Anne style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.

Physical Description

Single storey limestone and brick house which has a tuck pointed brick bay. The hipped roof has half timbered gables and chimneys with corbelling extant and the dropped verandah is supported by timber posts between a decorative timber frieze.

History

Malcolm Street was named for Sir Malcolm Fraser, the Commissioner of Lands and First Agent General for Western Australia in London (1892). Two cottages were built on the lot for Thomas Whitely, a builder, in 1888. In 1894 there were three cottages on the lot. One owned by Thomas Whitely, one owned by James Whitely and one owned by Joh J Whitely.
