Statement of Significance

The site represents a way of life no longer practiced, and demonstrates associations with the evolution of the town.

Physical Description

Mud brick, weatherboard and corrugated iron roof. The building was a long rectangular building with a central front door in the long side, marked by a porch. Entry was direct into the dining room, with the kitchen at one end and the family bedroom and living area at the other end. A bedroom at the "other"?? end was for special guests. Four small corrugated iron rooms formed a separate building at the rear of the main building. This was the working men's accommodation. Another separate larger room, at the front corner of the main building catered for travellers.

History

The boarding house was built in response to the men working along the railway lines, as they were established, and the subsequent opening up of the land, and the associated employment prospects. Mrs Harris and her daughter-in law ran the boarding house until about 1920. The building was sold to Jack Coyle. On the lot next door (Lot 10), Mrs Harris's daughter ran a drapery shop which was a small one roomed weather board and iron establishment with no verandah.
