Statement of Significance

House, 37 Marmion Street, is a single storey rendered brick and Colourbond house dating from c1910. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 37 Marmion Street is a single storey brick and Colourbond house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with Colourbond, and has exposed rafters. The main gable has ashlar effect render. The small gable has a timber roof vent. The verandah is under a separate Colourbond roof supported by round timber posts. There are air vents visible between the verandah and main roof line. The asymmetrical front façade has a protruding front room under the gable roof with a timber framed sash window under a Colourbond awning supported by timber brackets. The facade under the verandah roof has a door and two timber framed sash windows. The house is situated at street level. There is a rendered brick and steel fence to the front boundary line.

History

The Metropolitan Sewerage map sheet 2068 dated October 1915 shows a brick house with a protruding room on the left hand side at the front and a verandah on the right hand side. The wall of the house protrudes frontwards beyond the limit of the verandah. At the rear of the house there is a verandah on the left hand rear corner. Behind the house on the right hand side is a brick closet (toilet).
