The building is significant on the following grounds: 1. Designed by GG Lavater, built by Hugh Marsh, officially opened 1908. 2. Major venue for social occasions - local amateur and visiting professional theatre, dances, public meetings, etc. Many VIPs given civic welcomes there. 3. Public library, later art gallery in interior room at various periods. 4: In early years, Municipal Council used front rooms. 5. The building has featured on the Municipal Council logo for many years and symbolises the past and present significance of the town.
