Physical Description

99 Holland Street is a single storey masonry and iron house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted rendered brick. The roof is hipped with a timber ridge ventilator. A verandah sits under a separate corrugated iron roof. The verandah is supported by timber posts. The front façade has a simple timber framed awning. The place has a high timber paling front boundary fence covered with vegetation that obscures the view of the place from the street.

History

This Workers Homes Board house on Lot 1566 was built in the 1914/15 rate period and was first occupied by Charles Thomas Comber. Richard Thornett was the next occupant and by 1943/44 he had purchased the house. He was still residing there until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease). The 1914 Sewerage Plan (No 2118) shows a brick house with a projecting half-length front verandah on the west end and another verandah at the rear, with some small outbuildings. The house was originally number 170, and became number 99 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937. Aerial photos show that the house was extended at the rear between 1985 and 1995, and was reroofed c2005.
